When I get sick the first thing I notice is an elevated fever. For some a fever is barely noticeable, for me it is the gateway to misery. I hate having a fever and generally, when I do, I am totally useless. That said, when I first began investigating Far Infrared sauna therapy I was more than skeptical about the body heating enough to induce a ‘false’ fever. Fortunately, I had nothing to worry about. Years, and many hundreds of saunas later, I truly believe the small elevation in body temperature produced by Far Infrared sauna rays has been the reason for my continued and excellent health.
For a long time fever, hyperthermia, has been a misunderstood and mistreated symptom. Usually doctors attempt to combat and suppress fever when actually, fever is a constructive, health-promoting symptom, initiated and created by the body in order to combat infection and disease. High temperature speeds up metabolism, inhibits the growth of invading virus or bacteria and accelerates the healing process. In various parts of the world fever has been used for centuries to heal disease.
Quite simply it is hyperthermia utilized as a healing technique. Ancient healers were aware that a slight fever was a potent healing tool against various illnesses. Greek physicians elevated body temperatures in therapeutic gathering places as an immune defense against infection, and that concept still holds true even today. In the West Indies, natives afflicted with syphilis or cancer cured themselves by deliberately subjecting themselves to infection from such high fever diseases as malaria, typhus fever or typhoid fever. In ancient Rome the cancer toll rose as soon as they drained the water nearby, that was causing a plague of mosquitoes, thus causing malaria and it’s accompanying fever. No fevers, accelerated cancer rates. Conclusion- a fever kills virus and bacteria.
Although Far Infrared saunas are substantially lower in temperature than traditional stove or rock saunas, hyperthermic procedures are therapeutically making a come back as health care professionals realize that a non-life-threatening, artificially induced fever, can have extraordinary healing success. Slightly raising body temperature produces a natural, biological defense and healing force by the immune system to rid itself of destructive pathogens. Essentially, to literally burn out foreign or invading microorganisms.
Ancient herbalists incorporated additional heat producing botanicals as protective healing procedures against colds, simple infections, and even against severe degenerative disease. Nowadays, some holistic and alternative clinics use artificially generated fevers, most in the form of Far Infrared sauna therapy, to treat infections such as acute bronchitis and pneumonia, arthritic conditions such as Fibromyalgia and Lupus, and even more severe diseases such as cancer and HIV.
Specifically the principal of hyperthermia reveals that diseased cells are far more sensitive to and intolerant of excessive heat than normal cells. These cells cannot adapt and reproduce within higher temperatures. Tumors bacteria and viruses are simply unable to handle heated blood circulating around them. It has been shown, in many studies, that high temperatures actually kill diseased cells while maintaining the integrity of surrounding healthy cells.
Again this form of therapy is not new. The Greek physician, Parmenides, agreed. Two thousand years ago he stated, “Give me the power to create fever, and I will cure any disease.” William Coley, MD, published a paper in 1891 about this very subject. Noting that cancer patients who became feverish sometimes went into remission, his research revolved around the revelation that induction of a fever, in the body of a cancer patient, possibly stimulated the body’s natural immune response thereby causing the cancer to subside. Currently many hospitals in the US offer some form of induced infrared hyperthermia for diseased patients, the easiest and most efficient being the use of the Far Infrared sauna. Far Infrared heats the patients body causing a false fever, boosting health in several ways.
Commonly quoted is Lawrence Wilson, MD. In 2004 he wrote an article on Far Infrared sauna therapy and the battle combating cancer, “If I were to single out one method to combat cancer, it is the sauna. It assists in the removal of chemical toxins and heavy metals, increases oxygenation, enhances the immune system and reduces the radiation burden in the body.” The use of Far Infrared saunas provide a form of whole body hyperthermia which boosts health in several ways acting simultaneously and synergistically to support the fight against cancer. Remember, if this aids in combating cancer think what hyperthermia can do confronting less virulent diseases.
The therapeutic property of the Far Infrared sauna is attributed to the following facts; overheating stimulates and speeds up the metabolic processes and inhibits the growth of virus and bacteria. All the vital organs and glands are stimulated to increased activity. The body’s healing forces are aided and assisted, and healing is accelerated. The eliminative, detoxifying and cleansing capacity of the skin is dramatically increased by the profuse sweating. All in all hyperthermia is a valuable tool in your on-going battle to maintain optimal health.
