When I was in High School I was in a car accident and I suffered an upper neck injury; whiplash. To this day I deal with what I call chronic pain. Chronic pain is defined as any pain lasting more than twelve weeks. Chronic pain is very different from acute pain which can alert us to an illness or injury. For many years, prior to taking a daily Far Infrared sauna, I simply lived with the aggravation of a chronically sore neck. One of the many benefits I never anticipated when beginning Far Infrared sauna therapy was a serious reduction in my chronic neck pain.
Years ago patients suffering from chronic pain used thermal heating treatments to find relief. Studies found that regular thermal therapies were promising methods for lowering chronic pain that interfered with their quality of life and at the same time lowered their need for heavy pain medication. Researchers from the Japanese Nishi Kyushu University, discovered that Far Infrared sauna therapy might work even better to eliminate pain, lift a person’s mood, improve their well-being and generally make them happier. The 2005 study split a group of patients with chronic pain into two sections, one receiving multidisciplinary treatments without Far Infrared therapy and the other receiving all forms of treatment (cognitive behavioral therapy, rehabilitation and exercise therapy, and repeated thermal therapy using Far Infrared saunas). Therapy treatments were performed once a day for four weeks, and results were tracked immediately after treatment and then again two years after discharge. According to the patients’ test scores, which used self-ratings for pain, depression, anger and pain significantly decreased after treatment in both groups. However, pain and anger were significantly lower in the group also receiving Far Infrared sauna therapy. Two years after treatment, 77% of the patients in the infrared sauna group felt well enough to return to work, compared to just 50% in the control group.
Also, researchers from Saxion University of Applied Science, Netherlands, discovered that Far Infrared sauna treatments can help reverse chronic pain with little to no side effects. They studied, in particular, the effects of Far Infrared sauna therapy on patients with rheumatoid arthritis, RA, and ankylosing spondylitis over a four-week period. The patients took a series of eight Far Infrared sauna treatments. The Far Infrared sauna therapy was well-tolerated with no adverse effects. They established that a significant percentage of patients experienced decreased symptoms of pain and stiffness. Accompanying fatigue also decreased in both groups. They compared those patients at the start and at the end of the treatments and concluded Far Infrared sauna therapy has a statistically significant short-term beneficial effect in patients experiencing pain. They also sited no worsening disease symptoms or adverse side effects.
The proof is in the Far Infrared sauna therapy. It worked for me and if you are a person suffering from chronic neck pain, or any other type of chronic pain, try adding into your daily routine, the warm, gentle, relaxing and soothing heat of a Far Infrared sauna – you will not be disappointed.
