Ever since I have found out about infrared saunas I always wondered what it would be like if there were infrared clothes. Now this dream is a reality.
There is now a British sports company called Kymira Sport which recently demo’d its NASA-inspired clothing technology. This infrared fabric is designed to absorb heat and infrared radiation from the body, then emit that infrared heat back to the wearer at a different infrared wavelength.
The idea behind infrared clothing is that infrared light can stimulate processes within the body that increase circulation and flexibility and decrease pain.
The company got its start back in 2006 when a 16 year old student needed a topic for a research paper and found the NASA study which showed how infrared light helps plants grow quicker. This student’s name was Tim Brownstone, who was also struggling with a knee injury that had sidelined him from competing as a sprinter. He put the two concepts together and wondered whether infrared light could speed up his healing process. He was right.
Tim ended up studying animal biochemistry at the University of Reading, as he hoped to find a way to develop practical medical applications, such as speeding the healing of wounds naturally, using infrared light. He ended up switching to sportswear technology as the cost and regulations add up very quickly when creating medical devices (something we know far too well in the infrared sauna industry).
Why not add infrared radiation therapy and sportswear together?
There are no electronics in Kymira’s compression gear. The infrared light emitted by Kymira’s infrared clothing is invisible and can penetrate about one and a half inches under the skin (same as an infrared sauna). It works because of the infrared absorbing material that contains the use of ceramic powders (which our infrared heaters have as well). Ceramic is one of the best materials on the planet for absorbing infrared light and then emitting it out as heat.
My personal belief is that this clothing would be great when you are not in your sauna to assist in the relief of pain for sore joints or the parts of the body which cause you pain. I essentially see it as wearing a heating pad that works from the power of the sun! I will also help relax muscles and ease and increase your range of motion.
The Kymira sportswear really is a natural extension to an infrared sauna as it will keep you warm by maintaining core body temperature as well as return energy that is lost by an athlete back to your body.
