Over the years I’ve been asked many times about the general safety of Far Infrared saunas. Those who know I take a daily sauna trust my opinion because not only am I very healthy, I’m living proof of the safety of a daily Far Infrared sauna. The heat from infrared comes from a band of light we perceive as gentle, warm heat. We cannot see infrared however we can feel its effects. Infrared radiation represents almost half of the Sun’s emitted energy and can be divided into three areas; near, middle and far.
A bit about Far Infrared. Far Infrared saunas are generally very safe to use. They utilize effective radiant heat not unlike the sun’s soothing warmth. Radiant heat is more efficient because it warms the body, not the surrounding air. Thus, the body directly absorbs as much as 93% of the heat generated by the particular heaters I prefer; True Wave II combination carbon/ceramic heaters. Far infrared radiation is considered harmless for humans. It is this same radiation that comes from our sun. Far Infrared heaters are even used to heat premature babies in hospital incubators. The infrared radiant waves penetrate the body’s tissues to a depth of over one and one half inches. The energy output, from my combination heaters, is tuned to correspond very closely to the body’s own generated radiant energy.
My Far Infrared sauna is not only extremely safe but seriously contributes to my ongoing health maintenance. It is always wise though to consider some general precautions prior to enjoying any Far Infrared sauna:
It is best to not exercise before using the sauna. Exercise stimulates the sympathetic nervous system getting in the way of toxin elimination. Drink plenty of clean, spring water before a sauna session and and much as possible afterwards. Begin with around thirty minutes in the sauna. If you feel lightheaded you can begin with twenty minute sessions. Always shower off, bathe, or if you do not have time for a shower, towel off; showering is best. This wipes off all those toxins just removed through sweat. Always relax after a sauna session to allow your body to readjust. This is never difficult as simply taking the sauna is extremely relaxing! It is best to use a sauna first thing in the morning or the last thing at night. This is when you are the most relaxed and your sauna session will be the most effective. Always consult a health professional if you have a chronic illness and are not sure about sauna use. However, we have found no problems with using a sauna with people who have diabetes, heart disease and other chronic illnesses. Pregnant women and children under the age of five should not use infrared saunas. Young children must be accompanied by an adult. Continue prescribed medication while taking saunas unless directed otherwise.
As toxins are eliminated temporary symptoms may be present. Symptoms vary from mild odors, unusual taste in your mouth or rashes; these symptoms usually pass quickly. Some people feel great fatigue after sessions and this is normal. Almost all healing symptoms are benign and will pass quickly. Some people have bowel changes, aches, pains or headaches. Today many people may use saunas who have chronic illnesses that may affect their ability to tolerate the sauna’s heat. In our experience with those with cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, joint replacements and many other conditions, the sauna appears to be very safe.
Generally you will improve your health and add to your body’s ability to maintain that health. Keep in mind the precautions I mentioned and you can confidently enjoy a daily Far Infrared sauna for the rest of your life. Keep the faith – they really are safe!
