I need to take my own advice! Last night, after a vigorous game of adult softball, I got a huge whack on the head. My entire left temple, all the way down to my jaw is one, giant, swollen, pulsing pain. Too tired to jump in the sauna last night I woke up this morning and decided to do what I advise others to do – take an infrared sauna to relieve my pain! Infrared or far infrared sauna therapy has been used for years by physicians and therapists when pain relief was required. Particularly effective, far infrared reduces immediate pain from sports injuries, arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and several other chronic pain conditions.
Far infrared heat waves aid in the natural reduction of pain; from diminished inflammation. This warm, gentle heat penetrates the body’s joints, tissues, and muscles. Additionally infrared waves aids in improving circulation. It does this by increasing oxygen flow, it reduces sensitive nerve endings and diminishes spasming muscles. Again, these infrared rays provide relief. All this is crucial while continuing to allow the body to heal from whatever the cause of pain, naturally.
A great example how far infrared heat heals is the recommendation for infrared use from Dr. Jeffrey Spencer consulting with the athlete, Lance Armstrong. Dr. Spencer is an expert in Sport’s Medicine from USC. He believes and has recommended far infrared because it works. He has first-hand knowledge how infrared waves penetrate within the body and it’s tissues thereby producing profound results and benefits. He recognizes that the additional blood flow to tissues elevates oxygen saturation, thus extra energy, facilitating natural healing.
There are several other significant studies’ backing up Dr. Spencer’s findings, as well.
First, from Clinical Rheumatology, there is a study that found far infrared sauna therapy provides pain relief, especially chronic pain relief when used over a four week period. The study required a minimum of thirty-minute sessions at least two times a week. Those suffering from particularly painful issues like RA, arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis had amazing results; between forty and sixty percent reduction in pain.
Second, from Internal Medicine, even more, results demonstrated that even after only one far infrared sauna session those with chronic pain realized a seventy percent reduction in all pain levels. interesting to note that in this study the patient’s pain levels kept decreasing during the study’s entire observation period.
Third, a study from the Netherlands, at Saxion University of Applied Sciences, concluded that far infrared sauna therapy aided in the reduction of chronic pain without any obvious side effects. Of particular interest to this study were the effects and pain from RA and ankylosing spondylitis. This was a study conducted over a four week period to total eight infrared sauna sessions. The results were encouraging; no worsening symptoms or any adverse side effects. As early as the first couple of sessions patients noticed a reduction in symptoms of pain and stiffness and even the usual accompanying fatigue, associated with these conditions, apparently decreased. In conclusion, the study found that far infrared sauna therapy was beneficial for the patients both mentally and physically.
We have established that pain reduction, on almost all levels, is seriously reduced when utilizing far infrared sauna therapy. Primarily this occurs as endorphins are released even as the heat melts away common stress, along with the many negative effects stress brings with it. ACTH levels decrease and B-endorphin levels increase when interacting with far infrared waves. Just as increased endorphins aid in an elevated mood they also naturally decrease stress. When far infrared heat bathes the body in its healing waves, deeply penetrating into the body, blood flow increases, circulation becomes more efficient and as pain is reduced the body immediately relaxes and allows for normal and natural healing to occur.
When I was in High School I played baseball. I was always banging up something and injuring varying body parts. To this day I deal with what I call intermittent chronic pain. The definition of chronic or recurring pain is any pain that persists for longer than twelve weeks. Chronic pain is very different from acute pain which can alert us to an illness or injury. For many years, prior to taking a daily far infrared sauna, I simply lived with the aggravation of continual aches and pains. One of the many benefits I never anticipated when beginning far infrared sauna therapy was a serious reduction in all of my aggravating and chronic pain.
In the past, those who chronically suffered from persistent pain utilized thermal heat in order to diminish their pain. Studies found that regular thermal therapies were promising methods for lowering chronic pain that interfered with their quality of life and at the same time lowered their need for heavy pain medication. Researchers from the Japanese Nishi Kyushu University discovered that far infrared sauna therapy might work even better to eliminate pain, lift a person’s mood, improve their well-being and generally make them happier.
The study from 2005 divided chronic pain sufferers. The first group was offered varying behavior therapies to include behavior modification, cognitive therapy, and exercise therapy. They received no infrared sessions. The second group enjoyed the same multidisciplinary behavioral treatments but also used far infrared sauna therapy once per day for four weeks. The results were done swiftly and immediately following each treatment. Those in charge of the study followed up a full two years later only to find that over seventy percent of patients continuing sauna therapy still felt better and able to live life fully. On the other hand, the first group was less than fifty percent as satisfied.
Why not stop the endless cycle of prescription medication and begin using far infrared sauna therapy. The proof is in its consistent use and a decrease of symptoms. It is relatively inexpensive and far better for your long-term health. Far infrared worked for me and if you are a person suffering from chronic pain or any other type of pain, try adding into your daily routine, the warm, gentle, relaxing and soothing heat of a far infrared sauna – you will not be disappointed.
